Quantic Dream’s Latest Game Detroit Revealed, Exclusive to PS4
Hi everyone. Some of you might remember a PS3 tech demo called Kara that we released in 2012. It was about an android who discovered she could feel emotions and appeared to be sentient. Many people were deeply moved by this character and felt empathy for this character who just wanted to live. But everyone had the same question: what happens to Kara when she leaves the factory?
I kept asking myself the same question since we released this short. I knew I had to find out!
So we imagined our world in a near future where androids like Kara would look, speak, and move like real human beings. We wondered how we — humans — would react if we were confronted with a new form of intelligence, how androids conceived as machines would be perceived if they started to have emotions.
We didn’t want to do another story on AI (there are already so many great ones), we wanted to talk about what it means to be human and what it would be like to be in the shoes of an android discovering our world and their own emotions…
I am really excited to announce that Quantic Dream’s new title is called Detroit.
Detroit: Become Human New Trailer, New Playable Character Detailed
After our announcement at Paris Games Week last summer, we are very excited to be at E3 to show you more about our next title Detroit: Become Human! Today, we debuted a new trailer based on in-game footage, and we wanted to tell you a little bit more about the story of Detroit and an update on the game.
The World of Detroit
Inspired by our short called “Kara” back in 2012, Detroit is a neo-noir thriller set in the near-future city of Detroit. Androids, who look exactly like human beings, have replaced humans in most tasks: they are workers, babysitters, gardeners, nurses, teachers, clerks. The story of Detroit starts with an unexplained incident that begins to affect the Androids. Some disappear without any explanation, others have unexpected behaviors and strangely show signs of emotions. The rumors of “deviant” androids start spreading, but no one seems to know what’s really happening…
Connor, the Deviant Hunter
After Kara, Connor is the second playable character we’re introducing.
Connor is an advanced prototype assigned to police forces to help them investigate cases involving deviants. He is cold and analytical; he thinks fast and benefits from some surprising advanced features. He is very determined and nothing matters more to him than accomplishing the mission he was programmed for.
In this new trailer, Connor is confronted with a tense hostage situation involving a deviant android holding a little girl and threatening to jump from a rooftop. Depending on your decisions and strategy, Connor will succeed or fail in saving the girl; survive or die. Your actions will lead to different outcomes and will have consequences far beyond this scene.
Play Your Own Story in Detroit
Detroit is based on concepts we created in our past games taken to another level (well, that’s the plan ;-)
Detroit is about playing the story. Through your actions and decisions you drive the story and face the consequences of your choices. You are in charge of the fate of these characters. You will become a “co-writer” who will have to make critical decisions that will impact the entire story and its world.
As you play as all of the characters, you’ll see the story from different perspectives. You will need to weigh each decision, as actions made by one character may have consequences on others. You will also need to avoid putting the characters at risk, because they can all die, and like in Heavy Rain, the story will continue without them.
A New Engine
A game is not a matter of technology and emotions don’t need the latest shader to be felt, but we really wanted the best for Detroit (ok, and we also like developing tech). We have developed a brand-new engine with many advanced features (new renderers, a new dynamic lighting engine, physically-based shaders, physical cameras, and much more cool stuff). If you are like me and these terms sound foreign to you, check out the video for yourself.
Become Human
Detroit is about emotions, about dilemmas and making difficult decisions. Detroit is not just the story of androids becoming aware of themselves and their fight to be free, it is about a story that resonates at many levels in our world, about being free, about becoming who you are.
As always, we have put all our love and passion into this project, and we truly hope that you will enjoy seeing it as much as we enjoy working on it.
We still have a lot to work to do in order to make Detroit the truly unique experience we want to create, but we hope that you like this first look at gameplay.
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Quantic Dream debuted a new trailer for Detroit: Become Human during Sony’s E3 2017 press conference.
Additionally, over at the PlayStation Blog, director David Cage detailed the game’s third and final playable character, an android named Markus who fights to convince humanity androids are more than just machines:
After reintroducing the character of Kara at Paris Games Week two years ago, and revealing Connor in our first gameplay footage at E3 2016, we are thrilled to return to E3 for the unveiling of our third and final playable character: Markus.
If you’re not familiar with the game yet, Detroit: Become Human is Quantic Dream’s next title, for PS4 and PS4 Pro. It is a neo-noir existential thriller, set in a near future where androids look, speak, and move like human beings, and operate in society at every level from manufacturers to teachers.
Until now, humans have never considered these machines as anything more than tools designed to obey orders. But some of them are starting to exhibit strange behavior, as if they were experiencing emotions. The story of Detroit follows three of these so-called “deviants” as they begin to question their place in society, and desire freedom.
Markus (played by Jesse Williams) is an android who escaped his master and joined a small group of deviants hiding underground in Detroit. Lost and disparaged, they will try to find ways of convincing humanity that they are more than just defective machines – that they are alive.
In the new scene we’ve revealed at E3, Markus executes a covert operation during a cold Detroit night, with the aim of freeing androids that are for sale in a store. If he succeeds, Markus will have the opportunity to send a strong message to humans.
Will you manage to liberate your android brethren, or will you refuse to risk the life of their revolutionary leader? Will you send a message of pacifist disruption, or exercise revolutionary defiance? How will you navigate the dilemmas of leadership and wield your power?
In Detroit, you tell your own story through your choices. In each scene, every decision will have profound consequences – including whether each character lives or dies – but also a significant impact on the fuller story and the wider world: your attitude will shape media and public opinion, which will react in real time to your actions, altering the fate of your character.
In addition to Connor’s “Hostage” scene shown last year (playable at E3 this year on the show floor for the first time), we wanted to demonstrate again how branching Detroit really is. We also introduce for the first time a selection of new gameplay mechanics, which will allow players to experience the unique capabilities of androids as they create their story.
Both scenes also display the latest iteration of Detroit’s powerful engine and impressive technology. Each scene runs in dynamic 4K HDR on PS4 Pro and includes crowd management, special FX, full performance capture, and many other features that will make the world of Detroit more vivid and immersive for the players.
Kara, Connor, Markus – three androids discovering what it means to feel emotion – will take you on a moving journey of doubts, fear, hope and redemption. You will follow them as they struggle for freedom, you will join them in the fight to survive as the world collapses around them, and you will guide them through heart-wrenching dilemmas that put their lives – and the lives of those they care about – on the line.

PS4 独占游戏《底特律:变人》将在 2018 年发售
While the E3 2017 trailer for Detroit: Become Human didn’t feature a release window, Quantic Dream director David Cage has told GameSpot the PlayStation 4 title will launch in 2018.
“It’s going to be next year,” Cage told GameSpot.
Here’s a brief overview of the game, via PlayStation.com:
Travel to the near-future metropolis of Detroit – a city rejuvenated by an exciting technological development: androids. Witness your brave new world turn to chaos as you take on the role of Kara, a female android trying to find her own place in a turbulent social landscape.
Shape an ambitious branching narrative, making choices that will not only determine your own fate, but that of the entire city. Discover what it means to be human from the perspective of an outsider – see the world of man though the eyes of a machine.
Detroit: Become Human will launch for PlayStation 4 in spring 2018, Sony Interactive Entertainment and Quantic Dream announced during the PlayStation Media Showcase at Paris Games Week 2017.
Here’s Quantic Dream director David Cage on the new trailer that debuted alongside the release window:
When we released a short video called “Kara” in 2011, we never imagined where it would take us. Initially just a tech demo, the story of this female android wanting to be free moved millions of people online and won an award at the LA Short Festival — a first for a short based on a game engine.
Since then, I tried to imagine what happened to Kara after she left the factory. I had to imagine a world, our world in 20 years – the city of Detroit reborn thanks to the android industry.
I also imagined two other playable characters: Connor, the deviant hunter working with the humans, and Markus, the leader of the android revolution.
Since we introduced Detroit with a teaser focused on Kara, we released demos of Connor and Markus. We wanted to close the loop by showing a demo of Kara, which we are proud to do at Paris Games Week, the place where we revealed the game to the world for the first time.
The scene we are presenting is a very important moment in Kara’s story: we discover that she is owned by a human, Todd Williams, the single father of a little girl called Alice.
At this point, Kara is an obedient android in charge of taking care of the house and Alice – but the situation turns out in an unexpected way. Confronted with Todd’s violence toward his little girl, Kara feels compelled to disobey and risk her life to save Alice.
This is the beginning of an intense road trip that will take them – Kara the deviant android and Alice the little girl – through the darkest corners of Detroit in a journey of danger, fear, and hope.
Detroit is the story of our world in twenty years, a world where androids that look like humans are treated like objects and have no rights. It is the story of three androids’ struggles: Kara escaping to protect a little girl, Markus fighting to be free, and Connor chasing deviants; three stories that may well determine the future of all androids.
As the player, you will tell these three intertwined stories simultaneously through your actions and decisions. You will be confronted with difficult choices, moral dilemmas, and critical decisions that will shape the destiny of your characters and the future of their world.
Your actions will significantly change the story. Choices made as one character may have an impact on the others. You will also need to remember that all three characters can die at any point, which won’t lead to a game over, but will allow the story to continue without them…
Detroit offers a unique experience, something you have never played before. It is a spectacular and unexpected journey full of emotions, twists and turns, dangers and hopes, in the most branching experience ever created by Quantic Dream; where every choice matters.
While playing Detroit, you will not only discover these three characters but many others, and we hope you will remember Connor, Markus, and Kara’s stories for a long time – three androids fighting to become who they are…
We are proud to announce that Detroit: Become Human now has an official release date: on May 25th, you will finally have the chance to get your hands on Quantic Dream’s most ambitious title to date.
In a dystopian vision of our near future, Detroit is the story of three androids, three machines designed to obey, who start to feel emotions. Confronted with persecution and the violence of society, they will all have to decide who they want to be.
Connor is a prototype designed to help human investigators on cases involving androids; Kara becomes a fugitive by empathizing with a little girl, united in their dream of freedom; Markus will become the leader of the android revolution.
The player will control all three in turn, taking control of their destinies, and telling not only their individual stories, but also the story of their people and of their world.
Detroit is by far the most ambitious title ever created by Quantic Dream; with this game, we wanted to push our limits by creating the most bending game we have ever made. Your actions have real and spectacular consequences: there are entire scenes that you can see or miss based on your actions, your closest allies may help you until the end or die just after you meet them, your destiny itself can be totally different depending on your choices. You must also be very careful with your three main characters, because any of them may die at any time.
Each story is almost as unique as your DNA: it is the result of the choices you made, the minor ones and the important ones, because in Detroit, all choices matter. You will need to observe, think, decide, feel, follow your intuition or your heart, to tell the unique stories of each character, and their stories will become your personal story.
Detroit explores many complex themes that resonate with today’s world. Of course, it is about AI and the role of technology, but it is also more than anything about us, about our society, our dreams, our mistakes, our hopes. It is about what it means to be human: is it just about having flesh and bones, or does it mean more than that? We hope that it sparks some meaningful conversations and we’re looking forward to hearing what you think about it.
In order to depict the world of Detroit, we have also developed the most spectacular 3D engine we have ever created. We tried to push the limits of the PS4 as far as we could, with hundreds of highly realistic characters, full performance capture, scenes featuring crowds, all with a level of quality that we had never reached before. We have also imagined a new way of playing a story where you are in direct control of a complex story where any of your choices may have consequences.
With Detroit, Quantic Dream presents its most accomplished experience, a spectacular and unexpected journey full of emotions, twists and turns, dangers and hope, in the most bending story we have ever created – where every choice matters.
We hope you see Detroit as a unique experience that echoes some of the challenges our world faces, and maybe it even resonates with your own personal life. More than anything, we hope that Detroit will leave an impression on you, and that you will remember for a long time the story of these three androids who wanted to be free...
Detroit: Become Human - Three Characters, One Story
Many extraordinary stories have already been told about androids, whether it be in literature, film or television. But after having worked on Kara’s short video, I knew that the story I wanted to tell was different.
My first decision was to take the androids’, rather than the humans’, point of view. Instead of the wicked AI who wants to destroy good humanity, I preferred a different angle: my story would talk about humanity on the decline: selfish, dependent on technology, concerned only with comfort. Opposed to this: a new, intelligent species that we created, which discovers the world, feels emotions and asks only to live.
I wrote this story with the personal conviction that it was not only a story, but a vision of the future: how will we react when machines we’ve created become more intelligent than us and show signs of consciousness? Moreover, is consciousness only a question of computing power or is it something else?
Rather than a single, grand narrative, I chose to tell the story of three androids, three characters who discover their emotions and must choose their destiny.
I have been working on “multi-character” storytelling for several years (since Fahrenheit in 2005, even though Nomad Soul in 1999 already allowed control of dozens of different characters). It is a complex and exciting form of writing: it allows the player to stand in the shoes of several protagonists at the same time, to tell independent stories that meet, collide, intermingle, and above all tell the central narrative in a unique way.
This approach, originating in literature (Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, for example), popularized nowadays by many TV series, works in my opinion particularly well in an interactive experience: the player passes quickly from character to character, between different contexts and scenes, discovering the story from several points of view, enriching his experience.
We pushed this idea as far as we could, having three different composers (one per character) with radically different musical styles, three different moods, three different cinematographies, so that the player has a sense of playing three different games as they move from one character to another.
Through the player’s decisions and the intersecting destinies of these three characters, the player tells their own story. Every decision is important because it may impact not only the fate of one character, but also that of the other two, or even change the course of events for the wider world.
The destinies of Connor, Kara and Markus will be in your hands on May 25th. It will be up to you to tell their story.

Connor is a prototype, named the RK800, created by CyberLife. His initial goal is to assist human detectives in their investigations by offering them technological assistance. He is also equipped with a social module specially developed to create the “ideal partner”, capable of integrating into any team. He is also equipped with special features, such as a real-time molecular analyzer and a sophisticated simulator that can reconstruct past events. He is exceptionally intelligent, cold and determined, ready to do anything to succeed in his mission.
When the first cases of androids with abnormal behavior are reported, CyberLife offers to send this prototype to assist Detroit police. Connor has already undergone field tests involving androids, but this is his first investigation.
Connor is sent to join Lieutenant Hank Anderson, a grizzled, alcoholic detective who hates androids. Connor will need to make use of his “psychology” module to earn the respect of his partner and discover the truth about deviants.

Markus is an android who belongs to celebrated painter Carl Manfred, an old man who has lost the use of his legs. If at first Markus was only a machine in Carl’s eyes, a paternal affection has gradually developed. Carl treats Markus as if he were human, teaches him to paint, exposes him to literature and music; develops the android’s spirit a little each day.
Eventually Carl comes to think of Markus like a son, much to the dissatisfaction of Carl’s biological son, Leo.
Markus’ journey will take him from caregiver in the service of an old man to leading the historic android revolution. But to lead a revolution will be much more difficult than anything Markus can imagine: he must contend with the factitious disagreements of his people, face insoluble dilemmas, moral choices and sacrifice.
He must choose a path between violence and pacifism, between a closed fist and an outstretched hand. Through his choices, Markus will write the history of his people and lead them to freedom… or destruction.

Kara is an AX400 domestic assistant model created by CyberLife. The AX400 is a common model, designed to take care of the housework and look after young children. They can speak 300 different languages, cook more than 9000 dishes, help children with their homework and play with them.
Kara is owned by a former unemployed taxi driver, called Todd Williams, a strange and unpredictable character. He is the father of a little girl named Alice, with whom Kara is tasked with taking care of.
Under harsh circumstances, they quickly learn that they are not safe with Todd. Both will run away and struggle to find a path to freedom.
Becoming fugitives, they will discover a disjointed world falling apart and understand the strange feeling that unites them. They will journey from encounter to encounter, confronting violence and hatred but also the empathy of those who keep hope.

How Three Composers Created the Soundtrack of Detroit: Become Human
In Detroit: Become Human, players will be able to control three very unique characters. Although Kara, Connor and Markus are all androids, they are of different makes and have a very different background and function in society. To emphasize these three very different stories, we decided to entrust the original soundtrack to three composers with the aim to create distinct musical colors fitting our main characters’ identities and to sustain their individual arc.
To stress Connor’s very cold and mechanical behavior, we chose a primarily electronic soundtrack. For Kara, we wanted a music that would be emotional and moving, underlining her quest for identity, love and empathy. For Markus, we needed a soundtrack that would be epic and represent the grand aspect of his journey.
We were very fortunate to find three very talented composers who accepted this highly unusual approach.
We first contacted Philip Sheppard, a composer and cellist who composed Kara’s soundtrack. We had chosen one of his compositions early on in the development when searching for a track for the Detroit announcement trailer (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pelrr__9qx8). David was particularly moved by a track called Wind Storm and which featured very pulsating cellos. Philip is a cellist and has been composing soundtracks for film and television for many years.
We then contacted Nima Fakhrara who worked on the movie The Signal (dir. Will Eubank), which had attracted our attention. We were particularly intrigued by the fact that Nima created custom instruments for his projects, something we thought could be very interesting for Detroit: Become Human and Connor’s very special characterization.
John Paesano’s epic orchestral compositions on Daredevil (Netflix) and The Maze Runner (Dir. Wes Ball) got us interested in his work. His approach felt like the perfect pairing with Markus.
We contacted each of them, met them in LA or London, and explained to each what we had in mind for the project. Together with Mary Lockwood (music supervisor) and Aurélien Baguerre (lead audio) we setup a collaborative framework allowing each of them to be fed creatively with game assets exchanges with writer/director David Cage on a regular basis, and communication with the two other composers to be able to create unique scores within the same world.
It has been a complex endeavor but also an incredibly gratifying journey to work with each of them, resulting in a very unique soundtrack for the game, which we hope players will enjoy starting 25th May. Be sure to take advantage of the limited timed pre-order offer of the Digital Soundtrack, or the Collector’s Edition Soundtrack (Upgrade) within the Digital Deluxe Edition.

Detroit: Become Human Goes Gold, Demo Tomorrow
We are extremely pleased and proud to announce today, that after four years of passionate crafting, Detroit: Become Human has officially gone gold!
During these four years, we have gone through all possible states and emotions that the development of such a challenging project induces: the pride of working on something special and unique, the doubt of attaining all our creative and technical goals, the hope when publicly releasing scenes and trailers and seeing players’ positive reactions, the fear of not having enough time and resources to make everything perfect, the joy of finally seeing all parts of the puzzle come together, scene after scene, and finally being able to play the game from start to finish. And today, I guess it is with a mixture of all these feelings that we stand in front of you.
Detroit: Become Human is no longer our game. Instead, it will soon become yours. Yours to play, to own, to hopefully cherish. The fate of Connor, Kara and Markus is in your hands, along with the fate of all other characters in the game. Through your decisions and actions, you will have the opportunity to become the writer, the director and the main protagonist of the most branching story we have ever created. A story made of hopes, fears, sadness but also of joy and happiness. A story as much about us, humans, as it is about androids.
David Cage, the entire team and myself are proud of the work we have accomplished during these four years. We are grateful to all our wonderful actors, composers, artists and partners around the world who have lent their talent to making Detroit: Become Human the very special experience it has become.
We are also extremely grateful to our fans around the world. We have read all of your emails, all of your letters, all of your tweets and messages. Each of them has given us the inspiration to make the best possible game for our fans. Last but not least, we are extremely thankful to Sony and the whole PlayStation family for believing in us and enabling us to make our dreams come true.

As part of the Hostage demo experience, there’s also an extended Alexa Skill! Properly named “CyberLife,” the Alexa Skill will provide you guidance and additional intel about this near future android filled world. As you take on the role of Connor, a hostage negotiator android sent to take control of this high-stakes situation, the CyberLife Skill will help guide you in your decision making throughout the investigation process, while giving you a deeper look at the various characters involved within the Hostage demo. It will also give you insights on how you can best alter your decision within the experience that could result in a different ending outcome.
