SEGi has been Upgraded to University College
08 August 2008 - SEGi added yet another feather in its cap of achievements when it received the certificate of registration from the Ministry of Higher Education to be officially known as SEGi University College.
Speaking at a simple but significant ceremony to hand over the certificate, the Minister of Higher Education, YB Datuk Seri Khaled bin Nordin said that “the upgrade to status of University College reflects the growth and achievement of SEGi, which today has emerged as one of the most successful private higher education institutions in Malaysia and internationally.”
The upgrade also meant that SEGi has met stringent quality requirements by the Ministry of Higher Education, on top of meeting the standards set by world-class institutions and other professional bodies.
The University College has its RM150 million campus located strategically at Kota Damansara. The purpose-built campus, which was launched by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi earlier this year, is equipped with full-fledged infrastructure including the latest broadband Internet enabled computer labs, multi-million ringgit pharmacy and engineering laboratories, auditorium and lecture halls, fully equipped library with electronic resources, lifestyle cafes, on-campus student residence hall, a sports and recreational complex including a swimming pool.
This would provide a truly complete learning experience for up to 12,000 local and international students.
“The academic team also played a crucial role in helping the college acquire the status. Aside from possessing the right academic qualifications and industry experience, our faculty members undergo continuous upgrading and training. Plans are in motion to recruit and upgrade the qualifications of its academic staff to PhD level in the next few years,” said Professor Dr. Muhamad bin Awang, who was appointed to head the new University College at Vice-Chancellor.
Prior to this, Professor Dr. Muhamad was University Putra Malaysia’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor and advisor to the Ministry of Higher Education.
“Of course the academic team plays a crucial role in our upgrade to University College status as well. Aside from possessing the right academic qualifications and industry experience, our faculty members undergo continuous upgrading and training. Plans are in motion to recruit and upgrade the qualifications of its academic staff to PhD level in the next few years,” Prof. Muhamad added.
The newly upgraded University College also aims to encourage research and development culture among its academic staff, particularly in projects that cross-fertilisers among different faculties. The publication of the inaugural SEGi Review reflects the new direction of SEGi.
Such efforts are welcomed by the Government. The Minister mentioned at the ceremony at Putrajaya that “the development of human capital and intellect is a shared responsibility and the Ministry welcomes SEGi’s role in producing graduates with first class mentality, and contributing to Malaysia’s mission to become the regional hub of education excellence.”
The Minister also lauded SEGi’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and hope that the new University College may “continue to grow to become a great institution of higher learning.”
SEGi College is poised to offer more programmes other than its traditional business, accountancy and engineering programmes. Recently announced, the Group is looking at moving towards offering programmes of in the areas of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Allied Health Sciences.
“We have already launched our Pharmacy, Dental and Nursing Centre last week. And we received approval to offer the 2+2 Master of Pharmacy in collaboration with the University of Sunderland. Plans are also underway to offer medicine and dentistry degrees in collaboration with University Airlangga (UNAIR). I am confident SEGi will grow further in status and programmes.”
“We are also looking into offering three to four subjects dealing with international finance and environmental issues like climate change, health security and food security, to all our students,” he added.
Students at SEGi need not worry about funding, as it provides assistance in helping students obtain the PTPTN loan. Aside from covering full tuition fees, the loan also takes care of accommodation, transport and monthly allowance for qualified students.
Consistent with its tagline “Passion Guided Industry Driven”, care is taken to ensure that programmes available at the University College are recognised by the industry, particularly its professional bodies, both in Malaysia and overseas.
SEGi will continue to collaborate with its consortium of global universities in other disciplines in areas of product development, as well as providing pathways for its students to obtain internationally recognised degrees.
With these firm plans, SEGi is poised to take a quantum leap growth in the near future |
