Sony Interactive Entertainment and inFAMOUS developer Suc Ker Punch announced Ghost of Tsushima for PlayStation 4 during the PlayStation Media Showcase at Paris Games Week 2017.
Here’s an overview of the game, via Sony:
The year is 1274. Samurai warriors are the legendary defenders of Japan–until the fearsome Mongol Empire invades the island of Tsushima, wreaking havoc and conquering the local population. As one of the last surviving samurai, you rise from the ashes to fight back. But, honorable tactics won’t lead you to victory. You must move beyond your samurai traditions to forge a new way of fighting–the way of the Ghost–as you wage an unconventional war for the freedom of Japan.
And here is Suc Ker Punch game director Nate Fox on the announcement:
Is there a game that you always wished someone would make, but they never did? Well, that’s what we’ve been doing here at Suc Ker Punch for the last few years—building the game we’ve wanted for so long to be able to play.
It’s called Ghost of Tsushima.
Seriously, how come no one has made a sprawling samurai open-world game yet? Feudal Japan is beautiful; from the swaying bamboo forests to the ornate castles, it’s a place that demands to be explored. Don’t you want to wear a suit of samurai armor? Wouldn’t you like to fire a six-foot-tall samurai long bow? Want to journey across a lush countryside with a katana on your hip? For me, the answer is clearly “yes, yes please.”
I’ve been a fan of samurai comics since 5th grade, from Lone Wolf and Cub to Usagi Yojimbo. The types of characters, landscapes, betrayal, and sacrifice in those stories are a rich vein ready to be translated into a videogame. The artists and engineers here at Suc Ker Punch have brought this world to life on PlayStation 4, from tall grass blowing in the wind to the call of a far off crane, we want to make it feel real. All of what’s shown in our debut trailer was captured in our game engine, that’s the interactive world we’re painstakingly crafting together, that’s the world we’re going to set on fire.
In 1274, the Mongol army invaded Japan, their first stop: Tsushima Island. In Ghost of Tsushima, you play as a battered samurai, fighting back against overwhelming odds. In the trailer, you see the leader of the Mongols, a guy I would describe as an “uncomfortably reasonable killer” trying to intimidate our hero. It’s all there, right in that little scene. The power and confidence of the Mongol Empire coming face to face with pure, lethal, samurai determination.
We’re excited to finally be able to talk about the game and look forward to sharing more in the coming months. Keeping it a secret for so long has been painful. The trailer is the perfect way to share with the world what we’ve been dying to play for so many years—fighting back invaders in feudal Japan, mastering the katana and building your legend as “the Ghost.”
PixelOpus announces Concrete Genie for PS4
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Entwined developer PixelOpus announced for PlayStation 4 during the PlayStation Media Showcase at Paris Games Week 2017. It will launch in 2018.
Here’s an overview of the game, via Sony:
Concrete Genie is a game about a bullied teenager named Ash, who escapes his troubles by painting spectacular living landscapes and mischievous creatures throughout his abandoned hometown of Denska. As he masters this magical paint, he discovers it can purify Denska’s polluted walls. Can Ash overcome the bullies and paint his hometown back to life?
And here’s PixelOpus creative director Dominic Robilliard on the game:
Hi there, my name is Dominic Robilliard and I am the Creative Director of a small team at PlayStation called Pixelopus. It’s been a while since my last post — that’s because we’ve been away working hard on our second game: Concrete Genie. It’s an action adventure game about a boy called Ash who discovers he can bring his paintings to life.
As you might expect, given that our hero is an artist, a lot of the gameplay in Concrete Genie is about having fun with paint. Using DualShock 4’s motion sensor, you can effortlessly create stunning landscapes that come to life and even make your own cast of unique creatures to hang out and play with. Our goal is for anyone to be able to paint in this game. The paint strokes you make on the walls will turn into beautiful, living artwork.
Unfortunately, Ash has to contend with some bullies in the neighborhood, so the creatures in particular become really important to him: they’re the friends he wished he had in real life.
Concrete Genie is set in a small fishing town called Denska, which sadly at this point is practically abandoned. It has been heavily affected by pollution, but Ash discovers that his magic paint can cleanse the pollution from its streets and alleyways. Using the power of your brush to clean the walls is incredibly satisfying!
The team has been on quite the journey since we made Entwined. We’re really happy with the response we got to that game (It’s been downloaded over 1 million times!) but at the beginning of this project we decided as a team that we wanted to make something more accessible. Combining that with a desire to be more ambitious we decided to switch to Unreal 4 as our engine, and we invested in developing a 3rd person action adventure – a genre that we all have a lot of passion and love for. We wanted to make sure that if we were going to put our hearts and souls into making a game designed to create an emotional connection with players that it can reach as many people as possible.
There is so much more to share about Concrete Genie in the coming months, and I can’t wait to show everyone as much as we can as we head toward release in 2018. I’m also looking forward to sharing more from the team directly and their individual work on the game. There has been a lot of fascinating development behind the scenes, which I think will be really interesting for people to see.
Sony and FlavourWorks announce Erica for PlayStation 4 PlayLink
Sony Interactive Entertainment and FlavourWorks announced Erica for PlayStation 4’s PlayLink lineup during the PlayStation Media Showcase at Paris Games Week 2017. It will launch in 2018.
Here’s an overview of the game, as described by FlavourWorks creative director Jack Attridge:
Erica is an interactive live-action drama, with no 3D graphics at all. That means you are interacting with a film that has no visible interruptions so it feels utterly cinematic. It has the pace, flow, and production value of a Hollywood movie. The difference in Erica is that you are an active participant, guiding the namesake protagonist in her journey.
During the making of Erica, we strove to ensure that anyone would be able to play. With PlayLink, we opened the experience up to touchscreen devices as a controller, making the game even more tactile, allowing you to feel immersed in her story. Erica is all about touching the world – for example, you can delicately wipe a tear from Erica’s cheek, or flip through pages in a book to dig a little deeper into her world.
Erica is a young woman dealing with a traumatic childhood experience that continues to haunt her into adulthood. An old family friend contacts Erica believing her memories may be key to identifying a killer on the loose. It’s not long before the killer attempts to contact Erica too. Caught between different versions of the truth, you must decide whom to trust and what to believe.
The fact that it is live action means that you can look someone right in the eyes and decide whether you believe them. The performances can be so nuanced and the world’s details so intimate that we knew we wanted to tell this story in live action. All player choices have an impact on the story and in addition, all the physical actions have consequences on how the scene unfolds. Let me give you an example: if you open a door forcefully instead of gently, Erica might attract unwanted attention. In this game, actions are often louder than words.
We’ve seen groups of players engage with Erica, and it’s amazing how social the experience can become. The cinematic live action aesthetic draws in new audiences as the story of Erica invites conversation. It was always our dream to make something not only for seasoned gamers, but also loved by their friends and family who have never played a game. To achieve this, we had to rethink the way we approach design in the tiniest of details, and avoid assuming that players know anything about the conventions of games.
