Get so confused with this question anyone here to explain me briefly?

The primary mission of colleges and universities should be preparing students for the workforce

What does workforce meant by here?
Providing jobs and careers for students or just to giving students some lesson so they can find their job easily?
This question turns me offf I'm headache now getting more and more confusing and lost myself when I try hard to write the essay
Please lend me your hand...help me out,..thousand thanks from me!!

The primary mission of colleges and universities should be preparing students for the workforce
means colleges and universities should give the knowledges to the students about the future workplace, so that the students can handle the problems or challenges faced when they enter the workplace

it is not providing jobs or enable them to get a job easily
but preparing them to face the workplace's challenges

workforce is very rare and the synonym is manpower
i guess manpower more easy to u to understand
