505 Games to make own games. New IP reveal in the next couple of weeks
505 Games switches focus to developing its own IP
Publisher 505 Games says it is determined to develop its own brands going forward.
The firm, celebrating its tenth birthday this month, traditionally partners with other studios’ titles, and has helped turn Terraria, Cooking Mama, Payday and Zumba Fitness into smash hits.
505 boss Ian Howe told MCV that he’s not turning his back on these partnerships, but the firm is now looking to create its own hits.
“A lot of our past success has come from other people’s games, and whilst we’re happy to still have this play a part in our future, it’s critical that we develop our own brands,” he told us.
“We’ve been working hard on unannounced IPs that will launch in the next couple of years. We encourage everyone at 505 to think about the types of games they want to make. If we think the idea is strong enough, then we’ll make it. In that respect we’re taking an approach closer to that of a developer than a publisher.”
He added: “We have an exciting new wholly-owned IP to unveil in the next couple of weeks.”
505 Games will publish an unannounced multiplatform project from Typhoon Studios, a newly established independent developer led by a trio of games industry action adventure game veterans, the company announced.
The studio’s founders include:
Alex Hutchinson, creative director and co-founder. Most recently a creative director at Ubisoft Montreal, where he directed Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed. Other past work includes Spore, The Sims 2, and Army of Two: The 40th Day.
Yassine Riahi, technical director and co-founder. Prior to Typhoon he helped Rocksteady and WB Games Montreal ship various incantations of the Batman: Arkham franchise, and earlier Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Homefront, and the first two Army of Two titles.
Reid Schneider, executive producer and co-founder. Prior to Typhoon he co-founded WB Games Montreal where he served as the Exec. Producer on Batman: Arkham Origins and Batman: Arkham Knight. Other past work includes the first two Army of Two titles, Battlefield Vietnam, and the original Splinter Cell.

Alex Hutchinson, Typhoon Studios Creative Director and Co-Founder
“As a smaller independent studio, finding partners who will support our creative vision by giving us the freedom to build our game our way is a top priority. 505 Games not only provides us that creative control, they offer deep support from a partner who really understands how to elevate indie games and bring out the best in the studios they team up with. Their track record speaks for itself.”
Neil Ralley, 505 Games President
“We’ve been steadily expanding our portfolio over the last few years by identifying and partnering with unique indie studios poised to make fantastic quality games. Once we saw the project Alex, Yassine, Reid and the team at Typhoon is developing, we jumped at the opportunity to be a part of it. We’re always on the hunt for creative, innovative games and developers and this one certainly fits the bill perfectly. We look forward to helping Typhoon bring their exciting vision to life.”
Underworld Ascendant will launch for PC via Steam on November 15 for $29.99, and for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch in 2019, publisher 505 Games and developer OtherSide Entertainment announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via 505 Games:
In Underworld Ascendant, players assume the role of ‘The Ascendant,’ summoned to the Stygian Abyss by a mysterious figure – Cabirus. There, they learn that Typhon, a threat to both their worlds, can only be stopped by the player. To defeat Typhon, players must uncover secrets of what happened to the inhabitants of the Abyss, gain favor with their descendants and share their knowledge and strength with them to defeat Typhon.
In a throwback to game industry veterans’ Paul Neurath and Warren Spector’s celebrated past, Underworld Ascendant boasts a gameplay experience that encourages different playstyles and rewards experimentation in a dungeon environment that reacts dynamically to player choices. Players can choose from a variety of items, skills and abilities that allow them to experience the game in many different ways. They must think creatively to devise unique solutions to overcome the challenges they face in the Abyss, with each decision holding great opportunity and grave consequence.

A new trailer and a bunch of new screens were also released today, showcasing the dark and desolate world you’ll awake to on the Red Planet as a clone trying to survive on the unforgiving planet:
Featuring a rich and vast environment to explore and introducing a unique “seasons” mechanic to enhance the competition of surviving the Red Planet, Memories of Mars sets the stage for an otherworldly gaming experience designed to keep gameplay fresh. In the unique Seasons, which sets Memories of Mars apart from other survival games, death will be inevitable for even the most skilled players as periodic catastrophic solar flares wipe the planet’s surface of all life and player-made infrastructures on an ongoing basis. Memories of Mars will task players with surviving the harsh and unforgiving landscape of the Red Planet while building a habitable homestead and competing against other players and enemy NPCs for resources and opportunities. Players can team up to explore, gather resources and build defense bases or go rogue and explore numerous locations including abandoned terraforming towers, mining sites, caves, canyons, meteor impact sites and more. Seasons will also serve to make the map feel new, with familiar places rearranged in new locations, exciting points of interest never-before-seen, added blueprints for creating different weapons and modules, novel enemies, updated events and more.
