Funcom Reveals New Game - The Park' Releases October This Year
Amusement parks are happy places, filled with the innocent joys of childhood and the exhilarating rush of hair-raising, but safe adventure. Balloons, cotton candy and fantastic rides to be dared. Perhaps that is how Lorraine pictured it too when she brought her son Callum to one... just before it descended into the most terrifying nightmare of her life.
Funcom is thrilled to announce 'The Park', a unique horror story and the company's first single-player experience since its award-winning adventure 'Dreamfall: The Longest Journey'. Releasing on the PC in October this year, 'The Park' puts you in the shoes of a mother whose son goes missing. When night falls and the lights go out, what follows is a short, but intense horror story set against the backdrop of an amusement park where a dark and sinister secret is just waiting to be uncovered.
"It has been very exciting and creatively energizing for us working on a single-player experience again," says Funcom CEO Rui Casais. "'The Park' is actually the outcome of what started with a small group of developers experimenting with new concepts and looking at how we could draw upon the universes we have built for our massively multiplayer online games and expand upon them into smaller-scale single-player games. Something special started to take shape, and 'The Park' ultimately became something we are eager to share with the rest of the world."
Funcom will reveal further details about 'The Park' closer to the launch in October. In the meantime, please refer to theparkgame.com for the latest assets and information.

Guild Wars 2 Core Game Goes Free, Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns to Launch in October and Feature Raids
ArenaNet, publisher and developer of the acclaimed Guild Wars franchise, today set the stage for the future of Guild Wars 2 and its upcoming expansion, Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, at a fan and press conference at PAX Prime. ArenaNet co-founder and president Mike O’Brien and Guild Wars 2 game director Colin Johanson presented to hundreds of fans at a packed theatre in Seattle and many more tuning into the livestream from around the world. O’Brien revealed details about how the core version of Guild Wars 2 is now available to play for free starting today. The transition to free comes nearly three years to the day after the game launched to widespread acclaim, garnering a 90 percent Metacritic rating and multiple game of the year of the year awards, and selling more than five million units to-date. Johanson delivered news aimed at the game’s current player base, highlighting how Heart of Thorns will introduce raids as an all-new form of challenging group content for skilled players and a key part of the studio’s strategy for content updates after the expansion launches. ArenaNet kicked off the presentation with a video trailer confirming that Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns will ship in North America and Europe on October 23rd of this year.
By making the core Guild Wars 2 game free, ArenaNet is lifting the final barrier for MMO fans everywhere to play one of the most popular games in the genre and join a player community widely recognised as one of the best in online games. The move to free reinforces the studio’s strategy with its MMO business model. Like the company’s previous games, Guild Wars 2 launched as a buy-to-play game without a subscription. It has since delivered more than 40 major content updates to players free of charge. While the core Guild Wars 2 is now available to play for free, Heart of Thorns will launch as a buy-to-play experience without subscription fees.
“We believe the buy to play, subscription-free model for MMOs is good for players, and it’s good for developers,” said Mike O’Brien, co-founder and president of ArenaNet. “It gets a little tricky when a buy-to-play MMO introduces an expansion pack, leaving new players guessing about what they need to buy in order to start playing with their friends. As we get ready to release our first expansion for Guild Wars 2, we want to ensure that we keep a simple business model where new players can play the core game for free, while all players need only purchase one thing – Heart of Thorns – to get access to all of our new and future content.”
Shortly after launching the original Guild Wars 2, ArenaNet established a regular cadence for delivering free content updates with Living World seasons, which gave players story-driven releases similar to episodic television, along with major updates to game features and periodic in-game events. Heart of Thorns will follow a similar model, where major post-release content such as raids and eventually additional Living World episodes will be available free of charge to those who purchase the expansion. The strategy behind making the core game free is to engage players in Guild Wars 2 to the point that they will want to continue experiencing this ever-growing game universe by upgrading to Heart of Thorns. ArenaNet is currently offering a pre-purchase program for the expansion. Players who pre-purchase Heart of Thorns will get benefits such as unique virtual items and access to Beta Weekend Events between now and launch. New players who have begun playing the core game for free will have free account restrictions lifted once they purchase the expansion.
“In making Guild Wars 2 free, we’re not switching business models to a traditional free-to-play game, and we’re not aggressively monetising free players through microtransactions,” said O’Brien. “We’re making the base game free because we’re confident that anyone who loves Guild Wars 2 will consider buying Heart of Thorns, continuing their experience into the expansion and beyond with Living World and our newly announced raids.”
By unveiling raids at PAX Prime, ArenaNet answered a question on the minds of many Guild Wars 2 fans about the type of challenging group content that Heart of Thorns would deliver for skilled players. The expansion is introducing a variety of endgame content including entirely new and unique systems for max level players to continue progressing in the game. These include a new approach to leveling up called Masteries, which replace traditional number-based progression once players reach level 80 with a system of contextual and skill-based abilities to pursue and earn. There is an entirely new profession, the revenant, for players to master, along with new elite specialisations that bring additional skills, weapons and abilities to every existing profession in the game. There are also group progression features including guild halls, where players in guilds can claim, explore, and eventually architect and customise giant maps within the game world, and PvP Leagues, where teams competing in PvP are given a roadmap to develop their skills while earning status and rewards.
Raids in Heart of Thorns are a big piece of the puzzle for skilled players interested in taking on the ultimate challenges in group play. They will be 10-player instanced content where players must use newly acquired abilities to reach and overcome ever-increasing challenges, and eventually epic boss encounters. ArenaNet is releasing the first raid in three parts, or wings, shortly after the expansion releases. By activating raids soon after launch, players will have time to earn new abilities in the Mastery system that will be required to take on the challenges that await them.
“Once we activate the first raid in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, players will quickly discover they’re not about waiting to have fun or endless gear grind – there are no attunements to complete before you raid in our game, and our raids won’t become irrelevant or even drastically easier because of a new tier of gear or a level cap raise,” said Colin Johanson, game director on Guild Wars 2. “There will be no wasteland of forgettable raids left behind as we continue to expand the system. Once players complete a mission and beat the final boss in a Heart of Thorns raid, it will be a meaningful event that will linger for them, their guild, their friends and any player who learns that they’ve beat it.”
ArenaNet’s take on raids will be distinctly Guild Wars 2, factoring in the action-based combat system in the game to replace UI-gazing with active strategies such as weapon and ability changes on the fly in combat, skill combos, dodge rolling, positioning for attacks, and the ability to heal for every class. They don’t rely on the conventional tank, healer and damage dealer ‘trinity’ to take on challenges. Instead, all players in a group will need to step up and support, control and do damage in encounters in order for the group to succeed. Also true to form for fans of the game, raids in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns will deliver epic encounters and massive boss fights, providing enduring challenges for players to overcome, replay, and refine as they pursue legendary rewards.

NCSOFT Announces Date for WildStar Free-to-Play Launch
NCSOFT and Carbine Studios announced today that sci-fi MMO WildStar’s free-to-play update will launch 29th September, 2015. Additionally, the second phase of the closed beta test is set to begin tomorrow, focusing on fine-tuning the update’s changes prior to release.
More than just a business model conversion, the free-to-play launch will be the title’s biggest game update yet thanks to new content, enhanced game systems, and countless quality of life improvements. Titled WildStar Reloaded, the upcoming content update is the culmination of months of improvements and tweaks that make the game bigger and better than ever. New players will enjoy a greatly streamlined starting experience, while veteran players will be handsomely rewarded for their loyalty. As an added perk, all players with active subscriptions at the time of the free-to-play transition will also receive exclusive items as a bonus.
While the first phase of the closed beta has been focused on testing the improved player experience—including new content and tutorials—phase two will ensure that the economic aspects of the free-to-play transition are launch-ready. The second phase will also offer invited players a risk-free opportunity to test the new in-game store by buying NCoin—a real money currency that is all new to WildStar. All NCoin purchased during the second phase will be copied to players’ beta characters, allowing them to test the entire purchase process and the purchased NCoin will then be transferred in full to their live characters once the transition officially happens.
The free-to-play closed beta is accessible to all current subscribers, as well as non-subscribers who have been invited and redeemed a closed beta key. Anyone can sign up for a closed beta key by visiting the official WildStar site and clicking the “Sign Up For Beta” button.
