Press Play Invites Gamers to Help Choose and Develop Its Next Game

Xbox fans may know Press Play’s name thanks to the 2013 sidescrolling platformer Max: The Curse of Brotherhood and 2014 puzzle-platformer Kalimba – but pretty soon, the Denmark-based developer will be known for putting the gaming community front-and-center in a unique open development process.

Starting today, Press Play is opening up the studio and the whole development process to gamers just like you. This new transparent development initiative is about giving the community a chance to provide feedback and help Press Play create the studio’s next game. Over the past months Press Play has been developing three concepts and to show just how much influence the community is going to have, Press Play is letting you decide which of the concepts they should develop and turn into their biggest game yet.

The developers are inviting everyone to provide feedback on the three exciting concepts. Vote for your favorite concept by Sept. 1, and the whole studio will rally around whichever project ultimately gets chosen. The three concepts you’ll be voting on are:

And that’s just the beginning; beyond this initial feedback, the community will get the chance to engage with Press Play throughout development. Some of the things that Press Play is planning as part of this process include sharing early builds of the game and having community members join meetings and project reviews via Skype. And of course, that’s in addition to regular forum activity, lots of video, and frequent blog updates.

Press Play’s hope is that working with gamers like you will lead to better games. This is an exciting time to open the studio to you, and we can’t wait to open and maintain a dialogue between gamers and developers.

September Games With Gold Announced



Get Ready to Jump Ahead with Xbox One Thanks to September’s Games with Gold

By September, school’s starting, the weather’s cooling off, and the buzz of summer is winding down. But with our Games with Gold program, we’re just getting started! This month, we’re helping you get caught up with one of the most exciting, awesome series in video games as we bring you Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition on Xbox One. This complete version of one of 2013’s most acclaimed games will get you ready to Jump Ahead into November when Rise of the Tomb Raider, one of 2015’s most anticipated titles, comes out only on Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Also in September, Xbox One Games with Gold members will get the exciting, indie sidescroller The Deer God, and Xbox 360 members will get Battlestations: Pacific, the comprehensive World War II tactical and action simulator, as well as the eye-poppingly gorgeous shooter Crysis 3.

Finally, in case you missed our exciting announcement at Gamescom 2015, when backward compatibility launches in November, all future Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles will be playable on Xbox One. That means Xbox Live Gold members will get even more free games to play each month on Xbox One.

As usual, all games are available only for a limited time, as part of the ongoing Games with Gold program.

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition combines almost all of the downloadable content and all updates from 2013’s Tomb Raider, along with high-resolution 1080p graphics, into a single, easy-to-download package. If you haven’t played it yet, this is one of the most exciting, engrossing adventures available. Shipwrecked on a mysterious Japanese island, Lara Croft must learn survival skills, and solve the hidden mysteries of the island – all while dodging its bloodthirsty inhabitants. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is your chance to experience Lara’s origin story, completely free, ahead of the release of Rise of the Tomb Raider in November. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition is available from September 16 all the way through mid-October on Xbox One, so don’t miss out!

From September 1-30, Xbox One Gold members also get access to The Deer God for free. This beautiful, pixel-art-based platformer asks deep questions about reincarnation, karma, life, death, and what it means to survive in a state of nature. You play a hunter who is suddenly switched into the body of a deer – and vice versa. You must learn to survive, and eventually escape from the body of the deer that you now inhabit. Procedurally generated landscapes mean each playthrough is different, but the story will continue to challenge you philosophically every time, as well.

Xbox 360 Games with Gold members can enjoy Battlestations: Pacific from September 1-15. Putting players in the midst of World War II’s great Pacific Theater battles, Battlestations: Pacific gives players the chance to command fleets on either the American or Japanese sides, making strategic decisions to determine the outcomes, but also taking command of individual units from battleships to submarines to fighter planes and dive bombers, as they see fit. Influence the course of history as an admiral or as a single sailor in this grand strategy-simulation experience.

At the end of September, Xbox 360 Games with Gold members get the epic Crysis 3. A first-person shooter at the technological bleeding edge, Crysis 3 places you inside a super-suit that’s both incredibly powerful and extremely customizable to your play style. Earning experience allows you to upgrade your suit’s stealth and agility abilities, or its armor and strength enhancements – so you can either take the fight directly to your foes’ faces, or choose a more subtle approach. Whichever way you go, you’ll find Crysis 3 to be a challenging, fast-paced affair, filled with excellent enemy A.I., mind-blowing graphics, and some pretty awesome weapons and innovative gadgetry.

Project Knoxville is Press Play's Next Game

   

  






Fans Choose Project: Knoxville as Press Play’s Next Project

Last month, Denmark-based developer Press Play – known for 2013’s Max: The Curse of Brotherhood – introduced a new development initiative to its community, allowing fans to help choose Press Play’s next game from a trio of exciting concepts. The fans have spoken, and the winner is Project: Knoxville.

Knoxville is a third-person, multiplayer action game that deals with fragile alliances and survival, in a game show setting. It’s inspired by films like “The Running Man” and “The Hunger Games,” and players must work together and against each other. And this is just the beginning: Press Play’s community will get the chance to engage with the studio throughout Knoxville’s open development.

Right now, Press Play is working hard on getting Knoxville’s prototype into a sharable state. For now, you can check out the announcement video above, and head to Press Play’s official site to learn more about Knoxville, and sign up to join the development and be among the first to play the game. Make sure to tune in on Thursday, September 17 at 5:00 a.m. PDT (2:00 p.m. Copenhagen time), when Press Play kicks off its bi-weekly twitch stream – giving you a detailed look at the design process.

October Games With Gold Announced



Get Ready for Halloween Scares with October’s Games with Gold

Halloween is coming – and that means a little bit of scariness, thrills, and maybe some free treats from your neighbors. Well guess what? Games with Gold has you covered on all fronts. This month, both Xbox One and Xbox 360 Xbox Live Gold Members receive the entire first season of The Walking Dead - A Telltale Games Series, a terrifying and harrowing zombie adventure series, completely free. Additionally, Xbox One Gold Members get Valiant Hearts The Great War, an adventure game set amongst the real-life horrors of World War I.

Valiant Hearts is part adventure, part puzzle game, part history lesson, and part warning to future generations about the true horrors that men can perpetrate upon each other when circumstances get out of control. This challenging title’s story will stay with you long after you put your controller down.

Finally, in October, Xbox 360 Live Gold Members get to experience Metal Gear Solid V in all its glory, with the exciting series prelude Ground Zeroes. Set in the same world as the recently released Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes sets the stage for that game by introducing characters, key plot elements, and – most importantly – game mechanics. A tidy balance of stealth, action, and improvisation are at the core of Metal Gear Solid, and Ground Zeroes brilliantly puts that combination on display, tasking players with some critical rescue missions behind enemy lines. Twisted Pixel is independent again, no longer owned by Microsoft



Twisted Pixel Games Goes Indie (Again)

Twisted Pixel and Microsoft today announced that Twisted Pixel will spin-out from Microsoft Studios, allowing the Austin, Texas-based developer to return to its roots as a privately held, independent company. This event marks the start of the latest chapter in the companies’ nearly 10-year relationship.

The companies formalized their relationship in 2011 when Microsoft acquired the studio in a “minimally integrated” arrangement, a feature that kept the door cracked open for the development announced today.

“Microsoft has been an incredible partner since day one and we’ve always kept a background dialog open with them about the idea of returning to an independent studio model if the timing made sense for us,” said Josh Bear, Twisted Pixel co-founder and creative director.

Microsoft Studios has published six Twisted Pixel titles including the multi-award-winning Xbox 360 game “The Maw,” followed by acclaimed titles “Splosion Man,” “Comic Jumper,” “Ms. Splosion Man,” “The Gunstringer” and “LocoCycle.”

“Twisted Pixel has been a great partner to Microsoft Studios, bringing a range of innovative new experiences to Xbox fans around the globe,” said John Needham, Microsoft Studios General Manager. “I can’t wait to see what this talented team creates next and look forward to bringing their outstanding games to Xbox and Windows 10.”

“This transition has been in the works for a few months, with both parties working together to lay the groundwork for us to spin out and become independent again,” said Bill Muehl, executive producer for Twisted Pixel. “We’re looking forward to the new relationships and platforms this will open up to us and continuing our strong partnership with Microsoft on future titles for their platforms.”

Twisted Pixel will continue development of original games in Austin, Texas, and is always looking for top talent to join their team.

Microsoft has acquired Havok, will continue to license the tools to creators

　　微软日前在官方部落格宣布，已从 Intel 手中收购知名游戏物理仿真引擎开发商 Havok，收购价格未公布。 微软表示，未来将持续 Havok 既有的软件授权业务，以及把 Havok 技术整合到微软既有的开发者工具与平台组件中，包括 DirectX 12、Visual Studio 与 Azure 云端运算平台等。

　　总部在爱尔兰都柏林的 Havok，是 1998 年由都柏林三一学院大学计算器科学部门的休·雷诺德（Hugh Reynolds）与史蒂芬·科林斯（Steven Collins）共同成立的软件公司，主要从事针对数字媒体创作者的互动软件与服务提供，最广为人知的是旗下的「Havok Physics」物理仿真引擎。

　　根据 Sony 官方数据，直至今年 6 月底 PS4 已在全球运出 2,530 万台主机。 反观微软，自 Xbox One 发售以来就仅曾发布过一次销售数据，1,000 万台，但那也已经是去年 11 月的事情了。

November Games With Gold Announced



Xbox One Games with Gold Doubles in November with Backward Compatibility

Exciting news for Xbox Live Gold members, starting in November all future Games with Gold titles for Xbox 360 will be playable on Xbox One, giving Xbox One owners double the free games to play each month. Xbox One Backward Compatibility launches on November 12, play multiplayer with your friends no matter which console they’re on and enjoy Xbox 360 games with the advanced features of your Xbox One, including Game DVR, Screenshots, and in-home streaming to Windows 10.

Xbox One owners can download their free Xbox 360 Games with Gold from Xbox.com/GameswithGold or from their Xbox 360 console. The games will automatically show up in the “Ready to Install” section of “My games & apps”.

Holiday surprises are coming early in November with a great line up on Xbox One and Xbox 360. Xbox One Gold members get the first-person adventure game Pneuma: Breath of Life and the multiplayer swords-and-silliness action game Knight Squad. On Xbox 360, two fantastic titles, DiRT 3 and Dungeon Siege III, round out the Games with Gold offering – and both will be playable on Xbox One when Backward Compatibility begins rolling out on November 12.

Pneuma: Breath of Life is an intricately designed adventure/puzzle title that challenges players to delve into the mystery of consciousness and discover the power of one’s own decisions. Beautifully rendered – yet utterly sparse – environments convey a sense of lonely wonderment, while a minimalistic soundtrack helps set the stage for exploration and discovery. This is an utterly solitary game, but one that will leave you thinking, questioning, and wondering long after it’s over.

On the other end of the spectrum, Games with Gold is spotlighting Knight Squad, an action-filled, medieval-themed multiplayer party game with one goal in mind: Kick as much enemy butt as possible. You pick your representative knight, then face off against up to seven other players in a series of top-down, bird’s-eye-view arenas, in several different game modes – including deathmatch and a modified “soccer” mode, where you have to kill the other team to get to their goal. Part Bomberman, part Castle Crashers, Knight Squad is nonstop thrills for a party weekend.

For Xbox 360 (and Xbox One via Backward Compatibility), Games with Gold starts off November with Codemasters’ critically acclaimed DiRT 3. Competing in iconic rally cars across three continents, players can race through snow, rain and dirt and experience dramatic night races with thrilling rally driving or express themselves in the Gymkhana mode, inspired by Ken Block’s incredible freestyle driving event.

Play it on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. “It’s great that players can now continue their DiRT 3 career via Xbox One Backward Compatibility” said Jonathan Bunney, VP Publishing, Codemasters “DiRT is a much-loved series with thousands of fans worldwide and now Xbox One owners can relive the behind-the-wheel thrills that DiRT 3 delivers”

Finally, also coming to Xbox 360 is the action-role-playing game Dungeon Siege III. Players can choose from one of four characters, each with unique abilities, to embark on an epic adventure through a medieval land filled to the brim with dangerous monsters and fabulous treasures. Up to four characters can join the party at once, and while the A.I. will control these for you, Dungeon Siege III notably features full drop-in, drop-out online co-op play, so a friend can join you for the many twisting and turning levels. And, true to the series’ roots, there are no loading screens – the entire adventure unfolds across a single, seamless world.
